TeachersVolunteers at the school will be encouraged to work with the English teachers in delivering conversational classes and teaching students aged 7 to 15 years.Duties and Responsibilities: • You will act as a conversation partner and interact with the children through stories, activities and songs to improve their English. • You may be asked to assist the teachers in various ways, and most likely be requested to record some speaking texts to use in conversational tests. • Volunteers may also be engaged to help the school teachers with learning new skills such as drama and conversational English to enable them to teach better English in the future. • Volunteers are expected to initiate and prepare their own lessons. This may include preparing own resources and learning activities. • Participate fully as a member of the school community (this may include attending staff meetings and training sessions, school assemblies and special school programs). • You may be required to take students on excursions to use and practice their English (time permitting) You will teach for about 2 to 3 hours each day for five days a week (Saturday is the school day off). School commences at 10.00am and finishes at 4.00pm. Volunteer EditingYou will be helping with editorial duties of transcribing Tibetan Buddhist texts into English as part of the Tibetan Library & Archives objective of publishing books and manuscripts. A more detailed program will to hand after meeting with the Head of the Translation Department.Duties and responsibilities Volunteers are expected to follow instructions issued by partner organizations (in this case the Tibetan Library). You will required to work five days a week, (Monday to Friday), working times to be determined at induction. Qualifications/Experience: You should have a good knowledge of English and some knowledge of Tibetan Buddhism and be computer literate. Attention to detail, strong writing skills with an ability to spell and decode jargon and a sense of humor are necessary.
Child Care WorkerYou will be helping care and teach children from infancy to 3 years old. You should have a genuine love for children, be self-motivated and hard working, flexible and adaptable and have plenty of patience.You will work in the child care centre for the morning or afternoon sessions - about 2 to 3 hours each day for five days a week. The centre opens at 8.30am and finishes at 4.00pm. A more detailed teaching timetable will be provided after meeting with Centre Manager. Duties and responsibilities • You will be encouraged to work with the children in delivering, activities and songs using art and craft therapy plus a variety of resources. • You need to help keep the children entertained by actively playing and learning, getting involved in games, singing, and dancing etc. • Volunteers for this program may also be engaged to help local teachers with learning new skills to increase the development of the children. • Participate fully as a member of the centre’s community (this may include attending staff meetings and training sessions and special programs). Qualifications/Experience: Qualified child care workers, Kindergarten teachers or students of these fields.
Aged Care Worker – Nepal & IndiaYou will be attending to general housekeeping duties of aged care patients in a nursing home and private homes. You don't need any qualifications to participate but you should have a genuine love for older people, be self-motivated, flexible and adaptable and have plenty of patience. Duties and responsibilities • Personal Care • housekeeping and assistance with daily living activities • You will require a caring disposition • Able to work with minimum supervision • Always display neat and tidy appearance • Good communication skills • Be honest and reliable Qualifications/Experience: You don't need any qualifications to participate but you should have a genuine love for the elderly or disadvantaged, be self-motivated, flexible and adaptable and have plenty of patience. You should also have a willingness to work hard.
Special Needs CarerYou will be attending to the general needs of Children with Special Needs at a School for the Disadvantaged. Duties and responsibilities • Personal Care • Assistance with daily living activities • Assist local teachers with classroom activities Qualifications/Experience: You don't need any qualifications to participate but you should have a genuine love for the disadvantaged, be self-motivated, flexible and adaptable and have plenty of patience. You should also have a willingness to work hard, and good communication skills and a caring disposition.
Health Care Worker – Nepal & IndiaThe main focus is on preventative measures by way of regular basic health checks, and teaching women and children about health, personal hygiene and sanitation as a disease prevention method. There are various roles health volunteers can undertake, however this is not a medical program and you should not expect to be performing any medical procedures. A more detailed teaching timetable will be provided after meeting with Head Nurse Duties and responsibilities • Identify the education needs of the specified local community • Identification of health needs within the community • Identification of resources needed - Build up resources and identify needs for ongoing health requirements • Develop education program including advice on hygiene, first aid, nutritution, female and children’s health. • Implement Training Program –Train a future local health care worker to educate and work in the local community Qualifications/Experience: Nursing qualifications and practice in the field.
Social Worker - Nepal & IndiaThis is a project to identify negative treatment of children in the local factory working community and to develop and implement Community Education Programs. The desired outcome will be a sustainable community education program which targets parents and children in disadvantaged local communities. Workers in these communities are from remote villages and are in the majority poorly educated and often illiterate. Duties and responsibilities • Identify the needs of the specified local community • Identify signs of abuse and neglect in children (ie inadequate hygiene, poor diet, non attendance and low school attendance). • Report to NGO on findings. • Develop an education program to reinforce positive parenting and general positive care of children (ie encouragement for child to attend school on a regular basis). • Identify resources needed- Build up resources and identify what is needed for the education program • Training Program – Develop and train a local community worker to educate and work in the local community Qualifications/Experience: Qualified Social Worker and or Social Work Student
Community Maintenance Worker - NepalYou will be helping with wide range of practical village-based projects. These projects could be as basic as painting or general maintenance however, those with additional skills may be helping with more advanced work. Projects are usually decided upon in consultation with local NGO, but you suggestions are also welcomed. Duties and responsibilities • Assist with school repairs and decoration • Assist with toilet building • Assist with drinking water projects • Assist with and conduct recycling projects • Conduct Environmental education by informing the local community about appropriate waste disposal, recycling, composting and creating vegetable and flower gardens in the village. Qualifications/Experience: You don't need any qualifications to participate in this work but you should be self-motivated, flexible and adaptable and have plenty of patience. Trainee Traditional Potter – Nepal & IndiaThimi. Bhaktapur is well known for potter's village of Nepal. More than 6000 potters (1200 potter's families) are working in the traditional style of pottery making. Of these 60% male and 40% female are making a living through the profession. The profession is slowly changing to modern artistic pottery making. At present the demand for traditional pots (overtaken by plastic and aluminum ware) has been drastically reduced and the potters have changed to make garden planters and other decorative items. Learn the techniques of traditional pottery making with local potter: • The delivery of the clay and preparation of the clay through manual kneading of the clay ready for the next stage of making • Learn the traditional craft of shaping and forming the ware using manual and electric methods. • Hand painting the pots using traditional methods • Drying or firing – using giant ash kilns. Traditional fuel comprised of agricultural waste rice and wheat straw, rice husks is interspersed between the pieces. This agricultural waste fuel consists of, or any type of agricultural waste from the farms. • Preparation of pots for delivery Experience/Qualifications: No special qualifications or experience needed. An interest in pottery/ceramics is a must with the ability to work in adverse conditions |
